Nepal Hosts Major Climate Conference 2025 – Sagarmatha Sambad Explained

In May 2025, the world will once again turn its eyes to the Himalayas as Nepal hosts the third edition of the “Sagarmatha Sambad”, an international dialogue forum that reflects the country’s voice in global climate and environmental conversations. With the theme being ,"Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Humanity,” this year’s Sambad offers not just a timely reflection, but an urgent call to action. Held in the heart of the country, Kathmandu,  the Conference is much more than just a gathering of experts. When you stand on the summit, you sense the importance of bringing things and people together to secure the future of the Earth.

Sagarmatha Sambad was launched in 2020 as Nepal’s international platform to address critical global issues from a mountainous country. The idea was simple yet powerful, creating a place where nations, experts, and citizens can engage in much needed conversations about humanity’s future. Past Sambads were focused on climate change, moral leadership. The Sambad represents an effort led by Nepal to make sure that concerns which are related to naked mountains and natural disasters are no longer ignored. This Sambad is not just a meeting to talk about the climate but a reminder about the survival of humanity. Especially for countries like Nepal and Bhutan who suffer the most from the effects of Climate change.

This event is set to be inaugurated by the current Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. This is set to be an important event as it discusses various critical climate related issues. This event is to be attended by 350 local and foreign representatives, according to Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba. Several ambassadors, experts, heads of UN bodies, donors, regional and international organisations, research organisations, and NGOs are also participating in this Sambad.

Nepal being the home to Hindu Kush Himalaya Region, is at the frontmost when it comes to the climate crisis. A central concern that was raised during the Sambad was the issue of mountains losing over 80% of their snow due to increase in global warming. This in return increases the risk for flash floods, landslides and avalanches. This is a threat not only to the environment but to the people of nations as well. Climate change is not just melting ice. It’s melting economies, cultures and generations of knowledge which are tied to the land.

The brightest minds who have the knowledge and influence to change the current climate situation will discuss agendas related to challenges faced by the mountain countries, strengthening institutional bodies, working with fellow nations and most importantly allocating resources to help science tackle the issues of climate change will be discussed. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stated,” This Sambad is to discuss and deliver on the pressing challenges of our generation, Climate change, economic instability, inequality, AI and other technological disruption, health risk and disasters and the peace we wish for across the globe”.

The Sambad is a massive reminder for the global community to not only listen, but act. As Nepal and other small nations raise their voices, the question is: will the world finally hear them?

From the summit of Sagarmatha, you can see the world, its beauty, its fragility, and its mystery.Being there is the moment when you realize that the fight against climate change is not just about saving mountains or forests. It’s about saving people, preserving humanity, and securing a future for us and all our generations to come.
