Essential Information

Gosainkunda Lake Overview

The Gosainkunda Lake is a freshwater lake that lies in Nepal's high-altitude Langtang National Park. Geographically speaking, it rests in the Helambu region of the Rasuwa district of Nepal. The lake covers about 13.8 hectares of area, which looks stunning all year round.

Originating from meltwater, the lake serves as the main source of the Trishuli River. The Gosaikunda Lake remains frozen for about six months, from October to June, each year. As it freezes over during winter, the lake is also known as ‘Frozen Lake’.

The lake and its surrounding environment are characterized by high-altitude ecosystems with diverse flora and fauna. This area has endangered animals like the red panda, snow leopard and musk deer.

Additionally, the lake is considered hydrologically important because it is an alpine and oligotrophic freshwater lake. Its water has low levels of nutrients and organic carbon. It relies on bicarbonate for dissolved inorganic carbon, indicating a stable ecosystem with minimal pollution.

These features add to the charm of this lake. Because of this, many people visit this peaceful lake to enjoy nature and mountain views. From here, you get to see the beautiful mountain ranges like the Langtang, Ganesh Himal and Manaslu

Overall, Gosaikunda is not just a lake but a special place where nature, peace, and culture come together.

Cultural & Religious Experience

Gosaikunda is not just a lake but a sacred place that is significant to both Hindus and Buddhists.

This place is a home to Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri according to the Hindu belief. Hindus believe that Lord Shiva thrust his trident into a mountain here to extract water to quench his thirst after swallowing poison during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). Some people believe that the black rock in the lake is a form of Lord Shiva. Some even argue that one can see His reflection under the water.

Likewise, many Hindu scriptures like the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Bhagavata Purana include Gosaikunda as part of different stories. According to one of such stories, the Pandavas came here during their exile.

This lake is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus, especially during the time of the Janai Purnima festival. Thousands of people gather to take a holy dip at the Gosaikunda Lake during this time. It is believed that the lake’s water washes away sins and purifies the soul.

At the same time, Buddhists also respect this lake deeply. They visit this place to pray for their loved ones who have passed away. On the night before Janai Purnima, shamans (people regarded as having access to the world of good and evil spirits) lead special chants and rituals near the lake.

Many choose to walk through the rocky trails of high altitude to reach this place. Even though trekking to Gosaikunda is not easy, they say the spiritual feeling you get upon reaching there makes the walk worth it. However, if you want to relish the spiritual feeling without exhaustion in a short period, a helicopter ride to the lake is the best way.

Best Time to Visit Gosainkunda Lake

Visiting Gosainkunda Lake via the Gosainkunda Helicopter Tour is possible throughout the year. Each season offers a unique experience and circumstances, you can choose based on what you prefer.

Some months are more suitable than the rest of the months, especially for clear views and safe flying. The peak travel season of spring and autumn gives the best flying conditions as well. If you prefer snow, then winter can be favourable for you. But if you enjoy the view of blooming flowers, then summer can also be a beautiful experience. It also depends on what kind of beauty you wish to see.

The spring season, which generally lasts from March to May, is one of the popular choices. The weather stays mild, and the hills bloom with vibrant coloured flowers. The sky often remains mostly clear, offering great visibility of the mountains and the lake below.

The autumn season usually begins from September and continues till November. It is the most popular time for the helicopter tour amongst all seasons, due to dry weather and bright blue skies. The views of the Himalayas and Gosainkunda Lake are sharp and breathtaking. Many travellers prefer this time of the year, especially if photography and peaceful flights are something they’re into.

The winter season generally starts from December to February, creating a magical scene. The lake gets frozen, giving a snow wonderland experience as the mountain shines under fresh snow. If winter landscapes are your thing, then this is your season. But flights may face delays due to fog or rapid weather changes at higher altitudes.

Whereas, the summer season brings out the green hills and blooming flowers. The monsoon season starts from June to August, which has heavy clouds, rain, and poor visibility. It makes the atmosphere the least preferred time for the helicopter tours.

Types of Helicopter Services

If you’re planning for the Gosainkunda Helicopter Tour, our services save both your time and energy. We offer two types of helicopter services to choose from. The first one is a private charter flight, and the other one is a group charter flight.

The group charter flight is more affordable in comparison to the private charter option. You can share the helicopter with other travellers, which helps reduce the cost. It usually needs four to five people to fill the seats. More so, the weight of the helicopter should be 400 kilos or less, including the luggage. The helicopter takes off once the group is full, but you may need to wait a bit longer until the seats are filled. However, this is still a great option for people who want to experience the helicopter tour while still saving some money.

Another option is the private charter flight, which offers full privacy as well as flexibility. You can fly customizing as per your requirements, based on the time that suits you. This is a good choice if you feel unwell, have limited time, or want to avoid waiting. The whole helicopter is booked just for you or your group, which eventually comes with a higher price range. But the comfort and freedom you get are worth it. Last but not least, it is the best choice if you are looking for a quick and comfortable return journey, that too with full control over time, while staying in your privacy.

Both types of helicopter tours give you amazing views as you fly past mountains and valleys. Choose the better option that suits you best and fits your budget. Regardless of what option you prefer, you will get an unforgettable experience to remember for a lifetime.

Weight Allowance for the Gosainkunda Helicopter Tour

The total weight for the Gosainkunda Helicopter Tour flight is generally about 400 kilograms. It is the combined weight of both the passengers and their luggage. The chopper carries about 4 to 5 people in one flight. But the number can change depending the weather, too.

As such, before every flight, safety measures are carefully planned to make sure everything goes as planned. The flight does not take off if it is overloaded. The crew members always check the weight before heading on the journey. Therefore, make sure to always listen to their advice and stay calm in such a situation.

Weather Conditions at the Gosainkunda Lake

The weather conditions at the Goshainkunda Lake play an important role during the Goshainkunda Helicopter Tour. They can affect the flight safety and visibility of the mountains. While a good weather condition gives you a wholesome experience of the beautiful area, bad weather can limit your experiences.

The spring and autumn seasons are the best times of the year to go forward with the tour. These peak seasons offer clear blue skies. Also, the weather remains stable. Daytime temperatures range between 5°C and 15°C, which is quite pleasant.

Thus, these seasons offer great mountain views. You get stunning views of the Langtang range, the sacred Gosainkunda lake, and the nearby mountain peaks. The crisp air also makes these months perfect for photography, with excellent visibility all around.

Flights usually take off when the conditions are calmer early in the morning. The helicopter crew always checks the weather before starting on the journey. Tours might get delayed or rescheduled if it’s not safe to fly.

Safety Tips for the Gosainkunda Helicopter Tour
